Bond Institution, the nation's first private, nonprofit institution, is located in Robina, a Gold Coast, Queensland, neighborhood. Bond University has primarily been a teaching-focused university of higher education with a three-semester calendar since its founding on May 15, 1989. The university has been the nation's top university for its quality of education for 17 years running and is placed 20th in Times Higher Education's list of the Best Small Institutions in the World. Bond offers a variety of expedited postgraduate and undergraduate degrees and programs, certificates, and non-award programs through its four primary university institutions and academic faculties. As a joint venture to manage the university's land and finance the building project, Mr. Alan Bond, president of the Australian-based Bond Corporation, and Mr. Harunori Takahashi and Dr. Taro Tanioka, the governor of the Japanese-based electronics industry and Industrial Enterprises International founded and funded Bond University in 1987. Initially, the university's structures and surrounding land were spread throughout an area of around 212 hectares, including the Burleigh Forest, a former pine plantation. Bond founded a new firm called the Development Equity Company to develop the pine plantations he had taken control of in the 1970s from the Savoy Company Limited and Gold Coast Cooperation Plantations Society Limited. Brian Orr, who oversaw DEC, proposed a university for Gaven Forest to the Albert Shire Council in 1976. Although this initiative was abandoned, a later plan to establish a university near Burleigh Forest, undertaken in 1986, was successful. Bond and Peter Beckwith were among the people with whom Orr discussed the issue. Jo Anne Cracknell was chosen to conduct the venture's feasibility study. Bond decided to move forward with the project on July 3rd, and on July 17th, Queensland Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen officially announced Bond's desire to build a higher education institution, then known as the Bond Institute of Applied Technology, at the National Party of Australia discussion on the Gold Coast.
