What is the Morehead Cain Scholarship?

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship, formerly known as the Morehead Scholarship, is the first merit-based scholarship program established in the United States. It was established in 1951 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and given its current name in honor of John Motley Morehead III and the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation, its original benefactors.

In addition to paying all costs associated with a student's graduate education at UNC for four years, the scholarship provides funding for independent research, internships, and international study, as well as fully funded summer enrichment programs. In 2007, Mary Cain, who donated one hundred million dollars to the program, called it "the gold standard in graduate educational opportunities."
