Step 2: Work as an International Student in Canada

Working in Canada is an attractive option for many skilled foreign students from all over the world. Working during vacation is allowed for up to 40 hours a week for students on exchange. Approximately 8 – 10 dollars can be earned per hour. While on co-op terms, students can earn up to C$ 400 to C$ 1,000 each month working full-time off-campus. Their hourly rate ranges from $10 to $15.

1. Work on Campus (Without a work Permit).

Once you start your program of study in Canada, you can start working there. You can’t work before your studies begin.

Having access to all of your school’s buildings means that you can work there. As an example, perhaps you work for a library, hospital, or research facility.


If you are a full-time student at:

  1. A college or university, or a CEGEP in Quebec, are public post-secondary schools
  2. The school must operate under the same rules as the public schools, and at least 50% of the funding must come from government funds
  3. A private Canadian school that can legally award degrees under provincial law
  4. The permit must be valid and Obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN) (9-digit number issued by the Government of Canada)

2. Working Off-Campus as an International Student (without a permit)

When your study program has begun, you can begin working in Canada. Studying must come before work.

If you meet all of these requirements, you can work off-campus without a work permit.

  1. You attend a college or university that is a designated learning institution (DLI)
  2. You are enrolled in:
    A). Studies, vocational training, or professional certification at a postsecondary educational institution
    B). Training program for secondary students (only for Québec)
  3. You’re studying:
    A). There is a minimum 6-month contract in place
    B). The academic program culminates in a degree or diploma
  4. Your studies have begun
  5. The Social Insurance Number (SIN) you have is yours

3. Work After Graduation in Canada:

Your post-graduation work permit (PGWP) will enable you to work full time in Canada after you have completed a diploma, certificate, or degree that is at least eight months long.

There is no requirement for a job offer to apply for a post-graduation work permit, so you can choose any occupation in Canada, even if it is unrelated to your studies.

Am I eligible to apply?

To be eligible for a PGWP:

  1. A degree, diploma, or certificate must have been awarded after completing a program of study lasting at least eight months.
  2. All academic sessions must have been studied full-time without taking time off from studies.
  3. Students do not count breaks during their coursework, such as winter break or summer break.
  4. A minimum of 50% of your program must be completed in Canada, determined by how many courses you have taken in Canada.
  5. During your program, you must complete 50% of the coursework in person.
