Yseali Academic Fellowship 2025 Explained

The YSEALI Academic Fellowship is a short-term educational program designed for young leaders. Its goal is to give participants a better understanding of the United States and a specific topic, while also improving their leadership skills. The fellowship focuses on three main themes: Civic Engagement, Environmental Issues, and Social Entrepreneurship and Economic Development.

Each program lasts five weeks and includes a mix of seminars, readings, group activities, and lectures. Participants will also take part in educational trips, visits to different places, leadership tasks, and volunteer work in the local community. They'll have opportunities to explore beyond the classroom as well. The fellowship includes a study tour to other parts of the U.S., where participants will meet with various organizations working in their chosen field.

Civic Engagement Fellowship:

This program will teach participants about the history of civic engagement in the U.S. They'll learn about active citizenship, community development, grassroots activism, and volunteerism. Participants will meet community leaders, entrepreneurs, and representatives of non-profit organizations. The fellowship will run from September 28 to October 30, 2025, and will be hosted by the University of Nebraska – Omaha and Portland State University.

Environmental Issues Fellowship:

This program will explore how environmental policy has influenced the economic and political development of the U.S. Participants will learn about climate change, sustainable development, food security, renewable energy, and water management.

They'll observe these issues from different perspectives, including grassroots activism, impacts on marginalized communities, private sector approaches, global efforts, and government policies. The fellowship will take place from August 21 to September 25, 2025, hosted by the University of Montana and the East-West Center.

Social Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Fellowship:

This program will cover entrepreneurial approaches to addressing social and economic challenges. Participants will study trade, investment, financial literacy, microfinance, innovation, strategic planning, corporate social responsibility, and more. They'll meet with community leaders, entrepreneurs, and representatives of non-profit organizations.

Note:- The fellowship will run from April 14 to May 18, 2025, conducted by the University of Connecticut and the University of Texas-Austin.

Yseali Academic Fellowship 2025 Application Process

Candidates who are interested in the YSEALI Academic Fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Show interest, knowledge, or professional experience in Civic Engagement, Environmental Issues, or Social Entrepreneurship and Economic Development.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership qualities in their university, workplace, or community.
  • Display a commitment or interest in community service, volunteerism, or mentorship.
  • Express a genuine interest in learning about both the United States and Southeast Asia.
  • Be ready to actively participate in a rigorous academic program, community service, and study tour.
  • Commit to returning to their home country to use their leadership skills and training to benefit their community, country, or Southeast Asia.
  • Ideally, have limited or no prior study or travel experience in the United States.
  • Encouraged candidates include those from underserved communities, such as indigenous groups and individuals with disabilities.

Yseali Academic Fellowship 2025 Eligibility Criteria

  • YSEALI Academic Fellows are typically full-time undergraduate students currently enrolled in college, university, or other higher education institutions.
  • They may have graduated within the last four years. These individuals should exhibit leadership qualities through their academic achievements, community engagement, extracurricular activities, or professional endeavors.
  • Their areas of study can vary widely and may encompass the sciences, social sciences, humanities, education, business, and other professional fields.
  • It's important to note that the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) is committed to including people with disabilities in all of its programs. Therefore, host universities will make special arrangements to accommodate YSEALI Academic Fellows with disabilities as needed.
